Here is a list of Historical Societies. If your family was popular in their home town you may be able to find some things on them and their family at their town's local historical society. If there isn't a historical society in your ancestors' town, try looking to see if there is one nearby in the town over . You will also find out about the history of the town where your ancestor lived. You may be lucky and find pictures of your ancestors, records, and quite a few other things.
